New to CarveWright

My name is Fred and I just last week went to the plant and bought a machine, convient since I live here in Houston.I had played with the software for about a month before getting the machine. So far in the first week I have done several signs and hope to have enough inventory for a 3 day Bluegrass and Arts festival that draws over 1000 over the 3 days. I plan to take the machine there, since it is 3 days and also take orders and do designs on my laptop for customers. Of course I am going to rely on free patterns as I find them and will purchase some. I do have questions about wood, as I find pine to be a bit sloppy even for a 1/16th bit. Any suggestions on wood would be appreciated. I am going to the factory tomorrow for some one on one work with them to help with photoediting, etc. I would really like to see a tutorial on Color that Jason has done on lithopanes. Hope that I can contribute in the future, but I am in full learn mode at this time. The machine is wonderful.

Make sure you take advantage to the free patterns and project posted here and on Jason's web site. There are a lot to sort through and look at and I am sure you will find some to your liking.

Bluegrass fan as well! The wife and I went to the festival held at Teluride Colo. a few years ago. Great fun and music.

I thank you so much. I know Jason and quite a few others are held in high regard at LHR. They are helpful over there. Still I am curious what is a good wood, not too expensive for now that will hold detail at optimum carving. Pine seems to be too soft for real detail even with 1/16 bit. I have a piece of white oak in the machine now trying it. Being laid off from work and having never touched a piece of wood before I am behind the curve. However I have sold a few signs. Mostly make for wife and family to hang in their office...and that has gotten me off to a start. Long way to go. Tips and Tricks have been helpfull as all tutorials.
Currently I am designing my website, (that may be the easiest part) and trying to get lined up with CC companies for payment, plus paypal.
I have entered into several license agreements for logos and have managed to get permission from NFL properties. College is next to impossible and was part of my marketing plan.

are wide open. If you can get it cherry is great for detail carving. nice tight grain and good hardness!!

I have some real good success with select pine on optimal settings with large pattern size. Pattern size and depth make a difference in the amount of detail.

Poplar also does very well. It does tend to fuzz some though but still gets good detail.

oak, if you can get some with tight grain is good but is better suited for V cut signs.

Birch, did a carve for another carver that was having machine problem and he wanted birch. I was surprised how well it carved. This was the "praying hands" pattern with a square dance theme saying for their teacher.

I've also done redwood, cedar and hemlock and they did ok but being on the soft side some detail quality was lost in the clean up..
